What would Earth be like if our oceans never existed? That’s what Charlie wants to know! We recruit Earth detective Lucia Perez-Diaz to help us track down clues hidden within our planet’s rocks. Our investigation takes us through the mysteries of how water got on Earth, the giant plates moving beneath our feet, and why our oceans are shaped the way they are. Lucia’s also an illustrator, and will draw us an Earth without oceans. What will it look like? Listen to find out.

Learn more about how Lucia uses her detective skills to reveal the last 200 million years of Earth’s history, on our special bonus interview episode. It’s available to Patrons who pledge $1 a month or higher! You can support our show and get our ad-free feed on patreon.com/tumblepodcast.

Meet Lucia Perez-Diaz

Cartoon of Lucia Perez-Diaz

Lucia is a scientist and artist (you can see some of her incredible illustrations below!). As a kid she enjoyed detective stories and now she considers herself a detective of our planet’s mysteries. She studies the Earth to try and find out what may have changed through billions and billions of years!

She is currently working on a card game called QUARTETnary that teaches anyone about Earth’s geological evolution as well as her own book! Lucia also worked with EuroGeosciences to commemorate female scientists through her illustrations!

Check out a video of Lucia explaining her research on plate tectonics below!

And here are a few of her illustrations:

Illustration with a cloud, rolling hills, and water.

Illustration of space with the sun and planets.

More illustrations: the solar system, a ship launch, then space.

Pretty awesome, right?
